Ensuring a safe Orienteering Week by following traffic guidelines

Published: 26.06.2024

Kainuu Orienteering Week 2024 gathers thousands of orienteering enthusiasts into a small area at Joutenlampi in Kajaani. Joutenlampi is located at the end of a small road, and during the week, there will be heavy traffic in both directions. Therefore, all attendees must adhere to traffic rules and the organizers' traffic instructions to ensure safety. Here are some important specific traffic guidelines from the organizers to follow during the Orienteering Week:

  • Arrival at parking areas and the competition center is only permitted via the routes marked with the organizers' KOW signs. These signs begin on Highway 5 (E63) at Kajaani from the south and about 15 km before Kajaani from the north. When arriving from the east and Vuokatti on Road 8990, the signs start about 2 km before Highway 5. The signs will be in place by Friday, June 28. It is not possible or allowed to arrive at the competition centre via small forest roads from the north!
  • For those arriving from the north on Highway 5 (E63), please note the following traffic-related issues:
    • The bridge construction at Jormua, about 7 km before turning to Joutenlampi, will slightly slow down the arrival.
    • On Sunday, June 30, the return traffic from the Suviseurat event in Pudasjärvi may slow down the arrival on Highway 5. Although Suviseurat ends on Monday, July 1, there may already be some return traffic on June 30.
  • Access to the competition centre is only through the designated parking areas or by the competition bus from the centre of Kajaani. The main parking area is P3-Spectators at the Kainuu Horse Race Centre.
  • The route to the competition centre is closed to all except those with special access and parking permits from the Juntulanlammentie intersection onwards.
  • Please familiarize yourself with the parking instructions on our event centre and competition centre website
  • Access to the P2-VIP/MEDIA parking area is only allowed for cars with a maximum height of 2 meters, including accessories.
    • The P2-VIP/MEDIA parking area is sold out.
  • Joutenlammentie is the only two-way road to the competition centre, and parking along it is strictly prohibited!
  • Follow the routes marked by the organizers when moving within the competition centre, from parking areas P1 and P2, and to the starting points. Pay attention to the competition buses turning at the northern edge of the competition centre.
  • It is not allowed to drop off people at the competition center; all arrivals must be through the parking areas. The non-stop bus from the P3-Spectators Kainuu Horse Race Centre parking area and the competition bus from the centre of Kajaani will drop passengers right in the middle of the competition centre.
    • The non-stop bus between the race track parking area and the competition center is a low-floor bus used in local traffic.
  • Club tents can be brought:
    • a. To the competition centre by car on Saturday, June 29, from 3 PM to 8 PM.
    • b. On Sunday, June 30, club tents can only be brought by the non-stop buses from the P3-Spectators Kainuu Horse Race Centre parking area, the competition bus from the city centre, or with a P2-VIP/MEDIA parking pass, which allows access to the VIP/MEDIA parking area.
    • c. The distance from the P2-VIP/Media parking area to the club tent setup area is a few hundred meters, so those with a P2 parking pass can easily carry their club tents to their locations.
    • At the end of Orienteering Week on Friday, July 5, it is not possible to pick up club tents from the competition centre. They must be removed by
      • a. the non-stop buses from the P3-Spectators Kainuu Horse Race Centre parking area
      • b. the competition bus to the city center, or
      • c. those with a P2-VIP/Media parking pass.
  • There is a designated parking area for bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles at the competition centre, and they can arrive at the competition centre by following traffic instructions.
  • Allow enough time and bring a cheerful Orienteering Week spirit to ensure smooth movement throughout the week!
